The Limpopo avocados we source may at times not be perfect in size or appearance, but they are delicious, sustainably sourced, women-owned, and affordable. Although they are not organic and we do use chemicals to farm them, they are free of external ethylene gas (petrochemical) that is commonly used to artificially ripen avocados. This helps keep our carbon pollution to a minimum, while also providing the producers with a viable outlet for their produce that will not satisfy the supermarket criteria of “blemish free”.

Sending avocados to family in Cape Town in 2019 led to people asking how they could buy affordable avocados. As a result Susannah Cole Hamilton, the founder, did trials in early 2020 sending avocados testing box strength and delivery methods.

Susannah Cole-Hamilton has infused her personal values into this small, women-led company prioritising organic, ethical, locally-grown produce supplied all around the country with minimum packaging. Susannah says, 'We want to be good custodians of our environment and bring the flavours of Limpopo directly to your table, fresh from the farm". Susannah loves that Fresh from the Farm customers have direct contact with the producer and have access to affordable local products. She often says that chatting to people from across the country about the product on offer is incredibly exciting for her. Her hope is that Fresh From the Farm continues to grow and to increase its basket of goods.

Her right hand woman, Mohlao Mokgolane has been empowered to grow into this position, developing her skills to efficiently process orders and develop ongoing relationships with customers. Mohlao is enthusiastic and manages stock, communicates with the packhouse and is an incredible asset to the team.

If food waste was a country, it would be the 3rd highest emitter of greenhouse gases after the US and China. When we throw food away, we are also wasting the energy used to grow, produce, package and transport it. Cutting down on food waste helps keep our carbon pollution to a minimum. Providing suppliers with an outlet to sell their produce that is not "perfect" is a wonderful way to prevent food waste. When you add this to the fact that our farmers and food makers harvest to preordered quantities for food clubs - you can feel pretty good about your food waste.
